Reebok All Terrain Super ORDesigned for obstacle-course racing, the All Terrain Super has a thin, breathable, and mud-shedding mesh upper that snugs tight wth a speed-lacing pull. The sole is thin and flexible, with sharp, widely spaced lugs that dig into mud.The full polyurethane midsole on this unique trail shoe gives it a distinctive, stable, contoured feel underfoot. The fit, traction and durability are excellent, but the shoe is heavy and stiff for fast running. It works well as a versatile shoe for mixed walking and running adventures, whether urban or rural. Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2Like its road sibling, the Clifton, the Challenger ATR 2 is a surprisingly light shoe that offers superior cushioning. Hoka gave this second version a more durable upper. It is the most rugged of Nike’s trail models with a rock plate in the forefoot and Zoom Air cushioning in the heel. But the ride is fast with an upturned toe helping to roll your stride forward.The Neutron is a solidly built shoe with supportive, stitched overlays; an aggressive, trail-gripping and mud-shedding tread; and arch-wrap construction that reaches up and supports the arch on both sides. The traction and sturdy construction impressed testers on tough terrain. Underfoot, the midsole has a softer core surrounded by a more stable rim and base, with a thin, puncture-resistant layer between the midsole and outsole for a stable, protective, well-cushioned ride.
The Sync II from Treksta, a company known for its hiking footwear, impressed testers with its comfortable, if firm ride. What stands out is the contoured fit of the footbed under the heel, arch and toes, plus the shape of the toe box that allows the big toe the space to move in its natural, straight-forward position.A well-cushioned shoe from La Sportiva, the Akasha has a strong-rolling taper off the toe and a sticky rubber sole that won praise from our testers. A midfoot wrap ties the upper to the sole for a strong connection and some stability.This Swedish shoe got top marks for traction on gnarly trails and the comfortable fit of the well-padded heel collar and wide, airy toebox. Flexible plastic straps wrap the midfoot over a highly porous mesh that sheds water quickly. Salomon Wings Pro 2The “wings” on the Pro 2 are outriggers on a plastic chassis under the heel, providing side-to-side stability. Sharp-edged outsole lugs, a robust rock plate, and upper overlays that secure the midfoot create a shoe that excels on fast, technical descents.
