best shoes for walking in nyc in winter

I'm from Australia and have no idea about what shoes to buy to go to New York. I'll be there for 3 weeks, and will be doing an incredible amount of walking so I know they'll need to be comfortable, but how warm do they need to be? Will good walking shoes suffice or will I need insulated calf length boots? Edited: 9:58 pm, January 30, 2012 One destination mentioned in this post It's tough to say ... because we don't know exactly what the weather will be. A good pair of running shoes with warm socks are sufficient if it's not too cold or snowing. When it's snowing or raining you may want something water-resistent and with a decent tread to prevent slipping For evening ... if it's cold and dry, a pair of Uggs works ... but I wouldn't think they're supportive enough for lots of walking. (My 12yo would disagree). NYC is “suffering” a very mild winter (temperatures on Wednesday may reach 60 F. / 15-16 C.) and consequently, if it stays this way you may do fine in light, comfortable walking shoes.
That said, if you (ultimately) need them, it may be fun to shop for colorful galoshes in NYC while you are here and then wear them home.Your questions are always welcome. I learnt the hard way that Uggs definitely don't stand up to slushy footpaths and snow storms. although Uggs are comfy- for a long periods of walking they provide no shock absorbtion and eventually you will be sore or pull a muscle. so some sort of real comfy shoes I'd opt for trainers/ walking shoes for daytime serious exploring keep uggs or boots for nightime -walking less. I can't imagine you won't do some shopping while you're here. Prices are just sooooo much better. Bring some comfortable shoes you own that are broken in and whatever else you need you can buy while you're here. 3 weeks will give you plenty of time to shop.
DSW is a very popular discount shoe dept. store at Union Square (14th st.) and if that doesn't work, most of the stores will be having shoe sales. I just came from NYC and my favorite shoes are Merrell "Jungle Mocs" , they are very comfortable and keep your feet warm and you don't look like a "tourist" wearing them. They are available in mens, womens and kids - they range in price between $80-$100 depending on model, they use suede material that is water reisitant and they make a "winter moc" which is waterproof. best shoes for walking and cross trainingI swear by them!running shoes average weight Edited: 10:40 am, January 31, 2012where to buy adidas golf shoes
LOL, I went to see what a "jungle moc" looked like to discover they're the classic Merrells we all know. Never knew that was the name. If you don't mind making the investment, I think that any sort of comfortable ankle boot is great for our unpredictable winters and springs. Anything from Timberland-style hiking boots or Keen's or Merrells, to more stylish leather types. nike canvas shoes buyThey'll keep your feet and ankles warm and dry if need be.nike high tops leopard Thank you all very much for your help! best trail running shoes brands But based on everyone's advice, I think I'll buy and break in the walking shoes and then shop for some boots once I'm over there. I checked the links. Great choices, but it really may be overkill (unless you just want an excuse to buy them!)
You will want to bring multiple shoes if at all possible. It's not just about style, but also comfort. Different shoes wear on your foot different ways. It's entirely possible that you will have no ice and relatively mild temperatures. In that case, you'll be miserable in warm and water resistant boots. It's also possible that you may want to go out to dinner and look stylish. Bring shoes for that. Sneakers or other shoes with a good tread on the sole can be fine most of the time when weather is a little iffy and icy. If it's very cold, combine with wool socks. The tread will give you traction if there is a bit of ice or snow on the sidewalks. If you happen to have a big snow storm, with deep snow and slush that will last for days, you can buy inexpensive "snow boots" in NYC. Since sidewalks are usually cleared relatively quickly, sneakers or treaded sole shoes are good enough for most of the winter. Feedback on my tentative itinerary for older teens One Week in NYC

It might snow and coming from a country where it doesn't snow I know this question may seem a bit silly. If it does snow, should I come prepared with the right shoes? Typically when I travel I wear sport shoes for comfort, but if it snows, I can see my shoes getting wet very quickly.
What shoes should I bring with me? Would the grounds be slippery? The temperature and precipitation in NYC during mid-December can be quite variable from very warm and dry to very cold and wet. We recommend that you prepare for the best weather and bring your favorite walking shoes, and if “Mother Nature” throws rain, sleet or snow in your direction, purchase what you need at the many shoe stores here in the Big Apple. Edited: 10:29 pm, April 26, 2013 Last year we visited in February so we came prepared for wet/cold weather too. I bought a pair of snow boots that zipped up to just above my ankle. They were fleece lined inside and waterproof outside, so great at keeping my feet warm, and also flat so they were comfortable to walk in. The only thing I would do different next time is to choose a pair with better arch support or buy some insoles (you'll walk more than you think and it makes all the difference). We also brought some of those rubber grip things you slip on to the soles of your shoes when it's icy, just in case (I'm not very steady on my feet, especially on ice - think Bambi!), but we never needed them.
Check out boot options on La Canadien. Wonderful, walkable boots, that keep the moisture out. Also keep in mind that while snow may happen, it might not. Take warmer weather walking shoes as well. Come- if the weather report indicates mush- you can find cheap boots in Manhattan, K-Mart, Payless, and Conway should all have something. If the weather is dry -you don't have to lug boots around. I have recently bought a black pair to wear-in for my December trip. So far they are very comfortable and very light for packing in my luggage. They are also waterproof and have good treads. Read the reviews on the website. I wore a pair of mid calf length Camper boots (bought in OZ). They were warm and dry and fine with pants and dressy enough with skirts. They also were wide enough to pop in a pair of lambs wool liners (you can purchase these in shoe repair shops, the Scholl company that supplies feet things in chemists in Oz don't make them anymore). The liners really helped, didn't squish my feet given my choice of boots and if you're inside for a while and your feet are getting too hot, you can take them out easily....
So lots of variety which others above have mentioned is necessary. I suggest whatever you get, get them for OZ winter and wear them in. One attraction mentioned in this post Ranked of 797 Shopping in New York City I thought Oz was well known for ugg boots! as long as you spray them with waterproofer, you'll be sorted. If not a decent 'hiker boot' thats breathable and water proof. I wore berghaus on my visit. We USED to be known for Uggs. They originated in Oz but have been bought out by an American company I think ! I always thought that Uggs would not be a good walking shoe because the insole is very flat and your feet would get very sore after a lot of walking. But they are a great shoe for 'after' walking and when you are just relaxing. I would agree that you should wait and buy boots if you need them. Early to mid December is early for snow here, and the chance of there being enough snow in NYC to warrant boots at that time of year is pretty low (not impossible, of course, especially now that I've said it won't snow).
