In 1825, James and Cyrus Clark were busy tannery owners, producing sheepskin rugs to help warm the homes of local villages. Producing tanned products meant that there were many off-cuts, a large majority of which were simply disposed of without proper use. That was until James had the idea to turn them into something useful, recycling the old materials into sheepskin slippers. Month after month, the popularity of these slippers grew, and led the brothers to unfold new chapters in their story and begin opening up stores to sell their goods in. From court shoes and heels to sandals and sneakers, all shoes made by Clarks can be traced back to the decisions made back then. There is perhaps no other shoe brand with quite the unique history and longevity of Clarks of England. The company was founded nearly two hundred years ago in 1825 by two brothers who lived in a small village in England, Cyrus and James Clark. And as the story goes, the siblings made their first pair of shoes using scraps of leftover sheepskin. Their goal was to make a pair of comfortable, warm, and lasting shoes. Little did they know that they would start a company with a legacy that would endure for centuries. The shoes were in such demand that the brothers formed a company called C&J Clark Limited. The company continued to grow and expand in the years following. They expanded to the United States in 1977 and purchased the Hanover Shoe Company. A decade later Clarks bought the Bostonian Shoe Company. The combined companies, known as The Clarks Companies, North America, have more than 250 retail locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Clarks Shoes are still perhaps most widely known for their comfort and durability.
