Golf Shoes for on the Course and on the Town Watching golf on television, you may have noticed that golf shoes are shrinking. The minimalist movement is most obviously exemplified by the casual, street-style shoes some professionals have begun wearing in competition. The shoes have small plastic studs for traction but no spikes. A golfer can put them on in the morning at home, hop in the car, drive to the golf course, play 18 holes and still be wearing them in a restaurant afterward. Fred Couples introduced the shoe to the mass market at the 2010 Masters, when he wore a model produced by the footwear maker Ecco. Other golfers have followed, like Ernie Els, who has been sporting a Callaway version of the street-style golf shoe. Adidas has several models, including Samba, Crossflex and Adicross. Most every golf shoe manufacturer is paring down the traditional, clumpy golf shoe, retreating from that old look of a shoe on a raised platform of spikes. Nike, with the urging of Tiger Woods, borrowed from the Nike Free running shoe to make its new golf shoe, the TW ’13.

As the television commercial for the shoe implies, Woods wanted his golf shoes to feel like his running shoes. But it wasn’t nearly as simple as the commercial makes it appear. Tobie Hatfield, the Nike designer charged with developing the shoe, spent months on the first model, taking technologies from combat boots, football shoes and footwear popular with Special Operations forces. “We wanted to change the paradigm of how people perceive a golf shoe,” Hatfield said in an interview in June. “A golf shoe is really a complex piece of equipment because it has to be suitable for so many different surfaces — grass, sand, dirt or pine needles — and it has to perform on flat surfaces as well as undulating surfaces.” Nike’s new golf version has a sophisticated series of interconnecting features, including small studded spikes that curl up and around the top of the right big toe, from which right-handed golfers push off — and sometimes slip — on their downswing and follow-through.
