The youthful designers, their family and friends, the Nike collaborators – about 600 people in all – gathered Friday night at the Portland Art Museum for a presentation of the shoes, and coordinating apparel and backpacks. That was followed by an auction of special editions of the one-of-the-kind shoes, each autographed by Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant. "This is the night where I'm so proud of my brothers and sisters at Nike," said Michael Doherty, Nike's creative director for global brand presentations and a member of the Doernbecher Foundation Board of Directors. "These are people who design shoes for Jordan, Kevin Durant and LeBron James and apparel for Serena Williams. And they say this is the favorite project they ever have at Nike." Doherty was casting about for fund-raising ideas more than a decade ago when his then 15-year-old son, Connor, an avowed "sneakerhead," had a suggestion: Why not ask Nike to create a custom shoe honoring Doernbecher's patients?

That suggestion evolved into the production it has become today. In addition to the small details and color palates that reflect each patient/designer's preferences lies obvious indicators of Nike design know-how, marketing muscle and a sense of mission that rises above cranking out just another sneaker.
