This is why most districts in Metro Manila have at least one if not more large shopping complexes filled with retail shops, restaurants and other ways to spend your time and out of the relentless Manila heat.  Below is a list of some of the more popular shopping malls. Divisoria Market is one of the oldest local shopping markets in the city, and around Christmas time runs until late.  It is one of the larger  markets in Asia, and is located in San Nicholas between the North Port and Chinatown.  This market may be too congested and "local"  for many tourists.

It is busy from 8am to 8pm at night and the malls within Divisoria are well worth a visit. Ideally travel with a local, and watch your bag as pickpockets are common.  Great for cheap running shoes, all manner of flea market treasures.  During the day, the nearby QUIAPO market alongside the Quiapo Church of the Black Nazerene is a good place to pick up traditional Filipino handicrafts - as are the tourist shops in the nearby Intramuros (although at a higher price than in Quiapo). Walk along Carriedo St to JP Rizal Ave and there are many bargains to be found in the shops and stalls. Baclaran street market is vast stretching from Roxas Boulevard, past Baclaran Church to Balcaran LRT Station and on to EDSA. All manner of goods are available especially shoes, bags, cases and clothing. DVDs sell for P40. All dealers will demonstrate the DVD you intend to buy. Take the usual precautions for crowded areas, many pickpockets. Greenhills Shopping Centre has recently been renovated and is much improved and is another huge discount shopping centre in central San Juan, not far from the Robinson's Galleria (which is 800mtrs from SM Mega Mall - one of the largest indoor shopping malls in the Philippines). 

Greenhills is great for clothes, discount cellphones, jewellery including very cheap Philippines freshwater pearls, and some pirated goods.  Prices are higher than in Divisoria and Baclaran. It used to be the place to buy high quality and cheap pirated DVDs and computer software, but after a recent piracy clampdown, the DVD vendors have now relocated to the 2nd floor of the EDSA CENTRAL market on the corner of EDSA and SHAW BLVD (also neighbouring the Edsa Shangri-La Plaza). Expect to pay no more than 60-70 pesos per DVD. Some vendors have a tv where they will demonstrate the quality. Do not buy unless they can demonstrate. A very inexpensive shopping complex popular with Filipinos close to the central business district of Makati is "MARKET MARKET" at Fort Bonifacio, about a 15 minute taxi ride from the hotels of the Ayala Center.  Market Market is a multistory mall complex with department stores, and a huge flea market combined.  Prices are very reasonable indeed. Although more than 20 years old, ROBINSONS PLACE ERMITA is a better alternative. 

It is about 300 metres from Pedro Gil elevated LRT station. Unlike SM Mall of Asia, it is completely airconditioned.  Its 2008 addition fronting Pedro Gil Street, Robinsons Midtown, has substantially expanded the complex which now has at least ten new restaurants or cafes - from Persian to Pinoy (Filipino).  Chinese restaurant Mr Choi Kitchen on the ground floor  is one of many long-established restaurants offering excellent, cheap food and drinks.  Every conceivable service is available at Robinsons Place including handicrafts, an Internet cafe and cinemas. Similar to Ermita mall 800 metres north of SM Megamall. SM City Mall  located behind Manila City Hall is also worth a visit. Huge outdoor and indoor mall ocean front. Many stores and restaurants. Cinemas and large ice rink also. Another SM monster mall, recently extended. Many clothing and technology shops, art shops and restaurants. On EDSA, near the Shangri-La Hotel. The most expensive and exclusive Mall in the country.
